We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the HCSA Steering Group members, partners, donors, and stakeholders for their unwavering support in enabling us to broaden and accelerate the impact of the HCS Approach with the goal of putting an end to deforestation.
Key Highlights and Developments
- HCSA’s Portal cartográfico was finalised and is now live on the HCSA website. The portal includes interactive maps that show the distribution of HCS forests that have been identified through large-scale indicative mapping processes for Indonesia and Malaysia.
- HCSA published the HCSA Alert and Monitoring Protocol for Member Assessments. The Protocol provides information and guidance on how the HCSA monitoring system works, explaining how alerts and responses will be managed in cooperation with members.
- The new Procedimiento técnico del marco cartográfico a gran escala de HCSA was published to give guidance to identify HCS forests in landscapes of different sizes and regions across the world.
- HCSA has secured a grant from the German Development Agency, GIZ, to ‘Collect tropical forest field data to support high-quality AI-generated large-scale indicative High Carbon Stock maps’. This is a collaborative project that has been implemented by the HCSA and Jaringan Kerja Pemetaan Partisipatif (JKPP), an Indonesian-based participatory mapping network.
- The interim draft of the HCS-HCV Simplified Smallholder Approach for Indonesia has incorporated trial findings that were conducted throughout 2022 in Sanggau and Sekadau of West Kalimantan. The approach will be finalised by January 2024.
- A joint collaboration between HCSA and HCVN on HCSA’s Restoration and Remediation Guidance document has been published in 2022. This guidance will be trialled over the next two years with implementation support from the Secretariats of the HCSA and HCVN.
- In 2022, HCSA joined the international multistakeholder organisation Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR) as an affiliate member to support GPSNR member smallholders with No Deforestation implementation. GPSNR’s mission is to lead improvements in the socioeconomic and environmental performance of the natural rubber value chain.
- In 2022, HCSA joined the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TFND) as a member of the TFND Forum, and the Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA), a multistakeholder platform supporting the implementation of private sector commitments, to stop deforestation linked to palm oil, beef, soy and pulp/paper supply chains.
- In June 2022, HCSA joined dozens of international organisations and businesses focused on delivering practical action to protect tropical forests at the Asociaciones en favor de los bosques (P4F) Forum in London. HCSA’s exhibition and virtual booth showcased our work and impact as a zero-deforestation tool to delegates from a variety of regions and sectors.
- After four years in the role of Executive Director, HCSA said goodbye to Judy Rodrigues and welcomed Adrian Choo to the position. Our former Membership Outreach Manager and Quality Officer stepped up to the roles of Head of Development and Quality Manager, respectively.
